An article I wrote, reposted from Worldchanging.com:
Article PhotoSources of locally grown food are multiplying in Seattle.

Worldchanging has looked into the value of local food production before, and specifically at neighborhood farms and farmers’ markets in L.A., New York, Porland, Denver, and even my home town,Boulder.

Seattle is no exception to the trend, and there’s a lot going on. Seattle Tilth is teaching us how to grow our own food in p-patches and community gardens. BALLE and Sustainable Ballard are connecting us to the people that already know how through events like Eat Local Now. Businesses like Seattle Urban Farm Company are farming our backyards, while others are farming within or just outside of King County. A slew of CSA’s and produce delivery services are bringing the veggies from farmers to our doorsteps. Nonprofits like Seattle Youth Garden Works are giving young people a chance to build community gardens in our neighborhoods. And, of course, we can’t forget Seattle’s thriving farmers’ market scene.

There is a lot of support for these kinds of initiatives in the Emerald City. In keeping with the U.S. Mayor Climate Protection Agreement he initiated, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels (who seems to keep popping up on Worldchanging’s Seattle blog…) is encouraging consumers to buy locally grown food. “When it comes to protecting our climate, sending our food on a road trip isn’t such a hot idea,” Nickels said in a press release on May 9th. “Buying more food from your neighborhood’s farmers’ market is a great way to think globally and eat locally.”

Measures like these that limit the distance food has to travel, and therefore minimize the amount of carbon we put into the atmosphere, are vital nowadays, as we find out more about the causes and effects of global warming.

I’m sure I’m leaving out some great stuff that’s going on, so leave a comment if you know of anything.
